If you haven't joined SAJM on MEETUP.COM, it's time. This is where you'll find over 800 other amateur jazz musicians who want to play together. We've perhaps had about 1,000 events over the past decade, typically with about nine events per week (before the pandemic hit.) Now that things are starting up again, so are the jams and other events. This is a great way to meet new friends and play out.
To get started, first create a profile on MEETUP.COM. Then, in MEETUP, join the group Seattle Area Jazz Musicians. From there, you can browse members' profiles and have discussions about playing jazz, and post events to invite people to your own jam. Or try attending the already-scheduled events happening around town at the Owl & Thistle, Couth Buzzard, Capitol Cider, Angry Beaver, Darrell's Tavern and others.
All these events have their own objectives and guidelines for attending, and the public jams are not hosted by a MEETUP.COM organizer; instead, these are simply announcements that invite SAJM members to attend.
Steve's vision for starting this group was to find others to play jazz with, and have fun. A couple natural rules come out of that vision: (1) If you post something on SAJM, you're inviting over 800 people to play with you. If you are really just a band playing a gig and want to make an announcement to get an audience, don't post it on SAJM, unless you want us all to join you! (2) Be kind and supportive. These jams are for amateur players on the path of learning jazz. We are all working on different things. Be supportive, not critical, of your fellow community members.
